2023 Art Barrier Artists

 

This project is a partnership between the Town of West Hartford and the West Hartford Art League, who commissioned the 13 artists whose work is shown here.
Art Barriers are spread between Blue Back Square and West Hartford Center . Thank you to the town and the many town departments who made this project possible.

Carlos Ruiz Carrascal

Carlos Ruiz
was born and raised in South America between Colombia and Ecuador. America is the place I have had the privilege of living during the last 10 years. I obtained my bachelors of science with a Major in Architecture from University of Hartford and am currently a Quality Engineer during the day for an Aerospace Industry company. I am an art lover, have a particular interest in producing pieces related to the human figure and nature. My main artistic influence comes from the Art Nouveau movement/style. Amanda Mendoza

Location: In front of Max Oyster Bar
Amanda Mendoza is a queer, Latinx artist and survivor of childhood sexual and physical abuse. She uses art as a pathway to healing and connection to the community. Amanda illustrates her work using a variety of mediums, such as acrylic paint, pen and ink, and alcohol ink markers to show themes of healing and empowerment. Amanda is looking forward to more opportunities to paint murals that embrace and celebrate community care, diversity, healing, and empowerment. https://amandamendozaart.square.site


Emily Barnes

Location: In front of Arugula Restaurant
Emily Barnes is a designer, illustrator, and muralist based in West Hartford, Connecticut. Her work is all about combining the best of graphic design, typography, and illustration to create vibrant and impactful visuals. She loves using bright colors, bold lines, and playful patterns to bring my ideas to life, and she is always looking for new ways to push the boundaries of what's possible with her art.

Yvonne Espinoza

Location: In front of Treva Restaurant
Yvonne C. Espinoza is a visual artist and designer of Peruvian heritage and a resident of West Hartford. Her formal training in Fine Arts at Bard College, along with her ongoing studies in the many fields integrated with environmental studies, combine to form her signature style of mixed media artwork. After many years in marketing and project management, she is focusing on art and design work at the crossroads of art, ecological design, and resilience planning. Nick Glowacki

Location: In front of Savoy, Shish Kebab House of Afghanistan, & Division West
Nick Glowacki is a lifelong West Hartford resident and a senior at Watkinson School in Hartford, where he's enrolled in a dual-diploma program for the creative arts. Nick is primarily a painter, and most of his work revolves around concepts of motherhood and the body.

Brooke Toczylowski

Brooke Toczylowski
 is an interdisciplinary artist using garden-based research and public practice to explore our relationship to the land; all of the seeds represented in her design are planted in her community garden plot at Westmoor Park. She is currently pursuing her Masters of Fine Arts at Lesley University and you can see more of her work at brooketoczylowski.com, and follow her on Instagram @noisryriverstudio


Dana Loo

Location: In front of Savoy, Shish Kebab House of Afghanistan, & Division West
"Dana Loo
, a.k.a. "oats!" is an illustrator, pediatric nurse practitioner, and former professional cyclist currently based in West Hartford, CT. She primarily uses digital art to design postcards, stickers, and other paper goods to send to family and friends after a lifetime of moving around. She loves to create imaginary slice-of-life works and panel art. You can find her online @danaateoatmeal and around Connecticut this summer tabling at various art markets. She is inspired by video games, the magical thinking of children she meets at work, and comic strips. In addition to art and healthcare, she is passionate about cycling, traveling, stationery, and her wiener dog, Bumi." 

Kelly O’Donovan

Location: In front of Harvest Wine Bar and Restaurant
Kelly O’Donovan is an accomplished young professional with almost ten years’ experience in drawing and mixed media. At a young age, she started a business selling handmade art which sparked a passion for connecting with others through visual language. As an active participant in the West Hartford Art League, she has explored mediums ranging from stone carving to digital illustration and has since found her rhythm working with charcoal. She recently received a B.S. in Marketing and Entrepreneurship with a Minor in Studio Art from Boston College. She served as the Visual Arts Director for the Boston College Arts Council and was an undergraduate art fellow, with her work being featured in several campus-wide publications.


Emma Huntington
Location: In front of Avert, Union Kitchen & Wurst Haus
Emma Huntington is a visual artist and West Hartford resident. She is passionate about creating public art, and sharing the joy of color and creativity with Connecticut youth. Emma works full time as a Hospital Outreach Specialist where she shares her knowledge of art and play with pediatric hospital patients across the state. When she is not working with children, Emma is always creating; painting murals and public art pieces, throwing ceramics on the pottery wheel, cooking and baking with local and foraged ingredients, and knitting and crocheting. Lindsey Landry

Location: In front of Avert, Union Kitchen & Wurst Haus
Lindsay Landry
is thrilled to contribute to the ArtBarriers project with her piece, "Ostentation". Drawing and painting have been a passion since childhood that are indulged as often as possible amidst being a Mom of 3 and working full time as a Director of Engineering at Pratt & Whitney (which is to say not very often - so this was a treat!). 


 

Amanda Lipsky Ross
Location: In front of Restaurant Bricco
Amanda Lipsky Ross is a multidisciplinary artist out of Newington, Connecticut. Amanda enjoys creating highly detailed acrylic paintings and is a seasoned muralist. As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker she is motivated to work with individuals to create social change and empower communities through the use of art.

Jen Delgado
Location: in front of Kaliubon Ramen & Sushi
Jen Delgado of Westfield, Ma has been making Art for over 20 years. She has taughtkindergarten through grade 8 as well as at a local university as a visiting instructor. She spends some time most days making Art in her home studio. You can see more work on instagram at @jendel16

Julia Trusty
Location: in front of Vinted Wine Bar and Kitchen
Julia Trusty is an artist whose work mostly depicts the ocean or other outdoor themes. She is an environmentalist and works full time in the clean energy industry. She grew up in an artistic home and painting has always been a constant in her life. Julia is working on building her collection of reverse-painted antique windows to sell throughout New England. She can be found on social media @juliafaheyart.
