Children’s Art CLASSES

 

The West Hartford Art League holds year round art instruction for youths in the form of weekly daytime and evening classes Monday - Saturday in the fall, winter and spring, and a daytime camp for youths during the summer. The winter session will start the week of January 7th, 2019.

Creating Like The Masters
Mondays, January 7 - March 11
4:00-5:15pm, Ages 9-14

Come and get inspired to create your own Renaissance-style artwork! We will create frescoes by sculpting a picture out of clay and paint right into it while it’s still wet! We will make our own egg tempera paint and paint our own versions of the Mona Lisa. And we will also sculpt 3-dimensional clay tiles, similar to some that might have been found during the Renaissance days!

Wheel Throwing FULL
Wednesdays, January 9 - March 13
2:30-4:30pm, Ages 10-15

This course offers an introduction to basic wheel techniques. Through demonstration and practice, students will learn how to center clay and throw simple shapes on the wheel. Students may choose to use hand building techniques of pinch, coil and slab to create their own pieces. Different methods will be used to decorate the pieces before and after a bisque firing. All pieces will be finished by glazing.

Saturday Cartooning FULL
Satudays, January 12 - March 16
10:45-12:00pm, Ages 7-14

This is a fun morning class where kids will learn to draw cartoons. Every class begins with a warm up exercise so children can practice some basic art concept. This includes learning to use pencils and inks as all professional cartoonists do. Students will have access to a small library of books featuring characters such as Angry Birds, Pokemon, and superheroes.

Beginning Cartooning FULL

Little Monets
Thursdays, January 10 - February 14
9:30-10:30am, Pre-school

Little Monets is meant to be a fun, creative morning with your child. Join other parents and caretakers as your children socialize and create an age appropriate projects in our classroom. Watch or assist them as they develop skills as they collage, draw, paint, cut and create a different project each week. Class cost covers the attendance of one parent or caretaker and one child.

Drawing, Art, and Explorations
Satudays, January 12 - March 16
10:45-12:00pm, Ages 9-13

This class is designed for young people who love art and have a desire to create through drawing, painting, printing, collage and more. Our inspirations in class will be drawn from a diverse group of artists and cultures. Drawing, Art, and Explorations will offer many exciting and colorful projects using a variety of art media throughout the ten weeks.

Art For Young Children FULL
Tuesdays, January 8 - March 12
4:00-5:00pm, Ages 5-6

This class is for the young child who loves art. This class will introduce children to a variety of art materials and techniques while encouraging them to use their imagination as they explore the basic concepts of line, shape, color and design through colorful collage, tempera, watercolor paints, crayons, pastels, and air-dry clay.

Explore Different Cultures
Fridays, January 11 - March 15
4:00-5:30pm, Ages 8-11

As artists, we can virtually travel anywhere for inspiration. Come and join in the fun of exploring the world through projects inspired by different cultures and art styles. Learn how to form a Navajo coil pot in clay and decorate with underglazes, and make a warrior or dream shield. Broaden your knowledge of Vincent Van Gogh by drawing with pen and ink and painting pieces inspired by his paintings.

Handbuilding For Kids FULL
Satudays, January 12 - March 16
9:00-10:30am, Ages 6 and up

A good introduction to clay is the hand building technique. Explore the versatility of clay as you experiment using the hand building techniques of pinching, coiling and slab. Each week, individual creativity is encouraged, as students bring their own ideas to life. Different methods will be used to decorate the pieces, and all pieces will be finished by glazing.

Art Club

Activities are designed to encourage individual expression and inspire creativity while providing the child with an opportunity to explore a wide range of art media. Returning students are welcome, as each session of Art Club offers new projects for them to create.
