Children’s Art CLASSES

 

The West Hartford Art League holds year round art instruction for youths in the form of weekly daytime and evening classes Monday - Saturday in the fall, winter and spring, and a daytime camp for youths during the summer.

Fall 2019 classes will run September 9 - November 25, 2019. Registration will open July 24 for members. Non-member registration opens on August 7th.

Drawing + Painting
Mondays, Sept. 9 - Nov. 25
4:15-5:30pm, Ages 9-14

Come and get inspired! This class will focus on learning a variety of different techniques to create two dimensional paintings, drawings, and mixed media works of art. Learn how to create depth with perspective, color and composition. Light, value and shading will also be explored using a fun mix of famous artists as our inspiration throughout the session.

Wednesday Wheel Throwing
Wednesdays, Sept. 11 - Nov. 20

This course offers an introduction to basic wheel techniques. Through demonstration and practice, students will learn how to center clay and throw simple shapes on the wheel. They may also choose to use hand building techniques of pinch, coil and slab to create their own pieces. And finally, they will decorate the pieces before and after a bisque firing and glazing.

Handbuilding For Kids FULL
Satudays, Sept. 14 - Nov. 16
9:00-10:30am, Ages 6-9

A good introduction to clay is the hand building technique. Explore the versatility of clay as you experiment using the hand building techniques of pinching, coiling and slab. Each week, individual creativity is encouraged, as students bring their own ideas to life. Different methods will be used to decorate the pieces, and all pieces will be finished by glazing.

Saturday Wheel Throwing

Monday Cartooning
Mondays, Sept. 9 - Nov. 25

This is a fun afternoon class where kids will learn to draw cartoons. Every class begins with a warm up exercise so children can practice some basic art concept. This includes learning to use pencils and inks as all professional cartoonists do. Students will have access to a small library of books featuring characters such as Angry Birds, Pokemon, and superheroes.

Little Monets
Thursdays, Sept. 12 - Oct. 17

Little Monets is structured as a fun, creative morning with your child. Join other parents and caretakers as your children socialize and create an age appropriate projects in our classroom. Watch or assist them as they develop skills as they collage, draw, paint, cut and create a different project each week. Class cost covers the attendance of one parent/caretaker and one child.

Art Club

In this weekly class, young artists will enjoy creating through painting, drawing, printmaking, collage and more. Activities are designed to encourage individual expression and inspire creativity while providing the child with an opportunity to explore a wide range of art media. Returning students are welcome, as each session of Art Club offers new projects for them to create.

Art For Young Children

This class is for the young child who loves art. This class will introduce children to a variety of art materials and techniques while encouraging them to use their imagination as they explore the basic concepts of line, shape, color and design through colorful collage, tempera and watercolor paints, crayons, pastels, and air-dry clay.

Stone Sculpture Carving Class

Stone Carving, Sculpture and More
Thursdays, Sept. 12 - Nov. 14
4:00-5:15pm, Ages 8-14

Express your unique art style. We will work on experimental painting, collage and drawing and create small alabaster stone sculptures using rasps and files, and finish the forms to a smooth and shiny surface. You cay also choose to form wire sculptures. You may work “hands-on” in clay to create animal or other forms. An exciting and varied 10 week program.

Explore Different Cultures
Fridays, Sept. 13 - Nov. 15
4:00-5:30pm, Ages 8-11

As artists, we can virtually travel anywhere for inspiration. Come and join in the fun of exploring the world through projects inspired by different cultures and art styles. Learn how to form a Navajo coil pot in clay and decorate with underglazes, and make a warrior or dream shield. Broaden your knowledge of Vincent Van Gogh by drawing with pen and ink and painting pieces inspired by his paintings.

Our inspirations in class will be drawn from a diverse group of artists and cultures. Art + Explorations will offer many exciting and colorful projects using a variety of different types of art media throughout the ten weeks of class.
